A plethora of Denver’s top notch musicians are coming together to honor Denver DJ legend, the beloved, “MamaKat.” Dan Treanor’s Afrosippi Band with Erica Brown and MJ, James Speiser’s Roots and Rhythm, Lannie Garrett, Lionel Young, and many more of Colorado’s best and brightest will honor her with a PAR-TAY to mark her decades of service to our Denver music community.
Proceeds will benefit the non-profit program of Mama’s choice, the Colorado Blues Society’s “Blues in the Schools” Program.
Justina L. Curlee, aka “MamaKat” graduated in 1946 from Pueblo Central High School and from Pueblo Junior College in 1948. She has accomplished many great things, including raising twin sons, graduating from Metropolitan College of Denver in 1975 and working for the Federal Office of Health and Human Services in the Department for Civil Rights for 33 years. She was a dedicated volunteer at jazz89 KUVO for over 21 years and had her “Rockin’ ‘n Rhythm show since 1992. MamaKat currently serves as a senior volunteer for the Regional Transportation District (RTD) at community events such as Juneteenth and the Denver Black Arts Festival. She is currently the oldest female on-air radio host in the U.S. In 2012, Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver declared “MamaKat Week” in Denver in honor of her many achievements and contributions to the Denver community.
MamaKat, we love you, and this is our way of saying “THANK YOU” for making Denver radio on Friday nights a better and more soulful place!
