VIVA LAS DIVAS: FREE admission July 11th –Tonight only “LADIES ONLY NIGHT” FREE admission

JULY 11th is LADIES ONLY NIGHT and it’s FREE !

Also, FREE Admission to any men who wear anything girly;  even a feather, flower or earring will qualify!

This is not your stale old “drag” show, but a night of ILLUSION and glamour rarely seen in Denver. The “gals” of Viva Las Divas will step up the game in a show that is glitter and glitz, comedy, camp and more.

This “second Wednesday of each month” show is hosted by two of the most prestigious and talented female illusion artists this side of the Mississippi.  The beloved (and they’re best friends, too!), Alexandra Winters and Harley Quinn!

Whether performing like whirling dervishes, regular ole “hell on heels,” or dishing out quips and comebacks to their audiences, working a crowd is nothing new to these two pros.

Alexandra is best known in the “art of illusion” circuit for her spot on performances as the Divine Miss Midler and Harley has worked “her” magic on the gay rodeo circuit across America (albeit with more a Rodeo Drive touch).  Together they bring over 10 feet of comic timing and pageant queen sizzle to the stage.

Yes, you’ll see the classics like Cher, but also Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Drag Kings and even a national touring guest artist from time to time.

The night gives a nod and warm salute to all the incredibly talented illusion artists that have graced the stages of Las Vegas, New York and Paris.  VIVA LAS DIVAS!

There will be featured guest artists and stars who will perform variety numbers in diverse garb and drag.  Some of these guest artists include:

FELONY MISDEMEANOR (former Miss Gay El Paso) Whether it’s Beyonce, Janet Jackson or something completely unexpected, this drag superstar will keep you smiling.

“POP PRINCESS” – SASHA ANDREWS, the youngest, the rebel, brings a touch of Taylor Swift or Avril Lavigne to the show.

VENUS SEXTON really sings! Calling up Etta James and Billie Holiday or working a mean Mariah Carey.

KIERA SEXTON (former Miss Gay Colorado) is known for her glamorous nods to Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez.

MR. BOOTZY EDWARD COLLYNZ, the drag KING amongst the divas, will dance his way into your heart with Usher, Rick James or Chuck Berry.  Amazing!

Soul Singer/Idol Finalist: Devan Jones (funk, R&B band!)

Devan Blake Jones is a jazz/soul singer who honed in on his craft while singing in the church.  Growing up in Colorado, he went from singing in Colorado’s All State Jazz Choir to recently, the American Idol Season 11, where he finished Top 60 out of the 112,000 auditioners.   Devan auditioned for Idol along side such talents as Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet.  Tonight’s show is a combination of jazz, blues, funk, pop and soul performed by this amazing young talent.  Devan’s back up band consists of some of the finest musicians Colorado (and beyond):

Tohbias Juniel – Drums

Ronneka Cox – Keys

Charles Parkers Martens – Bass

Imkong Yaden – Guitar

ABOUT DEVAN

Devan has been performing since he was a child and has performed on hundreds of stages including the Pepsi Center (singing the national anthem for the Denver Nuggets), opening up for Grammy award winning gospel legend, CeCe Winans at Orchard Road Christian Center, singing as a lead vocalist for ATOMGA (12 piece afro-beat ensemble) at a sold out Boulder Theatre, and most recently, on the Las Vegas “Elvis” Cirque de Soleil stage for American Idol.

Devan is currently working on his first EP release, and has already released his first single entitled “Love Me Right” which was written by American Idol top 24 contestant and Denverite, Julie Zorrilla, and multi-platinum, Grammy award nominated producer, Nathan Reid (Brian Mcknight, Damien Marley, Jane Doed/Amanda Hawkins, Duncan).  Songs are being written and organically produced in the studio with live instrumentation and authentic delivery, much the same way records were made during the Motown era.

With a bright musical future, we hope that you will take part in Devan’s journey;  his very first album and watching him perform it LIVE.  His show is a throwback of soul, gospel, and jazz influenced music, and at the same time it will encourage audiences to embrace the entire musical experience and participate in whatever way it moves them.

Chuck Lettes’ Steel Guitar Jam

We are proud to be presenting the first show of the Denver Steel Guitar Show!

Come on down to see and hear the finest steel guitarists in Denver and beyond.  This ALL DAY event is hosted by steel aficionados and ace players, Chuck Lettes and Bob Case.

Here are just some of the amazing steel guitar players you’ll hear:

Scotty, George Sypert, Daniel Jones, Margie Mays, Harold Palmer, Glenn Taylor, Chris Kennison, John Arnold, Chuck Lettes, Bob Case and more!  The Jim Hyatt Band (www.jimhyattband.com), a top notch group, will back up many of the steel players, so you can count on a great concert!

WHAT IS THE STEEL GUITAR?

The steel guitar has been around as long as the guitar.  Usually the musician uses a metal bar (or plastic or a piece of wood) instead of fingers.  The pedal steel guitar is relatively new, invented in the 1950s.  It has since become the heartbeat of Country music and is heard on all of the hits, from Hank Williams to George Strait, as well as the signature sound of the great western swing bands like Bob Wills and Spade Cooley.

ABOUT THE JAM

Some will do a set with the house band, while other steelers will bring their own working band.  Expect to hear a wide variety of musical styles, from traditional non-pedal sounds to some more modern sounds and beyond!  The whole idea is to showcase the versatile sounds of the steel guitar in a variety of musical settings, from trios to five-piece bands.

ABOUT SOME OF THE PLAYERS

Glenn Taylor has been working in many musically diverse bands over the last many years, from Slim Cessna’s Auto Club to the Glenn Taylor Orchestra.  Styles range from honky tonk country to electronic dance to free improvisation and more.  glenntaylormusic.com

Daniel Jones has been playing pedal steel since the early 70s in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the Denver area, like Chuck Lettes he has played with Lannie Garrett in her Patsy DeCline Show, and the Denver Center’s, Always Patsy Cline production.  Daniel has always enjoyed exploring non-traditional styles for pedal steel, an interest he continues in the jazz direction with his quartet, Standard Deviations.

Margie Mays has worked with John Agar (the movie actor) when he was a country singer in Southern California with the “Freedom Train” and has shared the stage with the Gatlin Brothers.  Margie continues to perform Hawaiian music and western swing in the style of her mentors, Speedy West and Noel Boggs.

Scotty (DeWitt Scott) is influenced by the Jerry Byrd, Don Helms and Little Roy Wiggins style of music.  Scotty has written 8 instruction steel guitar books published by Mel Bay Publications, as well as many instruction books on his Midland label.  He is member of the International Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame and has hosted the annual Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis for over forty years.  For more about Scotty check out his website, www.scottysmusic.com.

Chris Kennison is a performer with Barleen’s Arizona Opry in Apache Junction Arizona, as well as the Rocky Mountain Opry in Estes Park.  Chris is also on the board of directors of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association. When he’s not playing with the Barleen’s you can find him sharing the sound of steel with his Hawaiian band, Book ‘em Danno.

Chuck Lettes is a featured writer for several steel guitar magazines, teacher and player with many touring artists from Doug Kershaw to Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, and locally with everyone from The Jim Hyatt Band to the longtime sideman, “Chester Drawers,”  in Lannie Garrett’s, Patsy DeCline Show.  He is a recent inductee into the Nebraska Country Music Hall of Fame.

Susan Alcorn is a Baltimore, Maryland-based composer and musician who has received international recognition as an innovator of the pedal steel guitar.  Her original music reveals the influence of free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, indigenous traditions, and other musics of the world.  www.susanalcorn.net

Bob Case has been playing steel guitar in bands since the early 1970s.  He has worked with Billy Spears, Dusty Drapes and the Dusters, Lynn Morris, Junior Brown and Doug Kershaw among others.  He is currently playing with Jockamo, a New Orleans style rhythm and blues band and at annual steel guitar shows.

Bret Billings has played professionally for over forty years.  Introduced to the pedal steel by none other than Dick Meis, Bret and Bret Bertholf, aka Halden Wofford, are the charter members of the Hibeams.  Bret plays a triple neck Fender Stringmaster.

Howard “Happ” Palmer’s love for country music and dance floors filled with two-stepping couples keeps him playing honkytonks up and down the front range.  He has worked with Bitter Creek, Silverado, Sandy Skees Band, Gretchen Peters, and currently plays pedal steel and electric dobro for The Wild Road Band.

George Sypert is a veteran of the country music scene and has managed his own band for 40 years.  His love for the steel guitar has made him a popular performer with many bands in Southern Colorado.

Ron Elliott has had a long and varied musical career. He has performed on television and on the Grand Ole Opry, backing many Nashville greats, and he has also helped to design premier steel guitars and amplifiers.  He was inducted into the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame in 2009.

Lannie Garrett’s Beatles to Bacharach: Songs/stories of the two of the greatest songwriting teams-Lennon/McCartney-Bacharach/David

ALL NEW SHOW!

Lannie and her fabulous quintet, The Errand Boys of Rhythm, are at it again with a brand new tribute show that Lannie calls, “Beatles to Bacharach:  Songs of a Generation.”  Lannie pays tribute to the music legacy, the songs of, The Lennon/McCartney and Burt Bacharach and lyricist, Hal David, undoubtedly some of the most prolific and brilliant songwriters of the baby boomer generation and beyond.

ABOUT THE SHOW

In the first set, Lannie and the band give a nod to The Beatles’ songbook.  Lannie has chosen a collection of beloved tunes that range from ballad to country, from pop to rock.  Arranged by Lannie’s musical director/piano player, Justin Adams, the songs are new interpretations, but will still resonate with baby boomers, as well as young and old alike.  The lyrics, the melodies and the soul are all intact.  The music promises to warm your heart and bring back memories of the 1960s.

The second half of the show is all songs from the brilliant, Burt Bacharach.  From the literally hundreds of hit songs that Burt and his lyricist partner, Hal David have written, Lannie chose an assortment that will remind you of the prolific talent of this songwriting team.  She opens the set with a funky version of “Walk on By,” and closes the show with an audience shout out of “What the World Needs Now.”  You will hear familiar Bacharach tunes and a couple of his more obscure tunes that you might have forgotten.

As always, Lannie will weave stories and the history of the artists in between songs throughout the show.

The costumes, the backdrop, and the stage have been specially designed by award winning designer and friend, Kevin Copenhaver.  The show will have a 1960s/’70s look and tone.

Join us for an evening of incredible songs and warm memories.  Whether you grew up with these songs or became a fan later on, their magic is sure to move you.

The show is open to ALL ages.

Written and produced by:  Lannie Garrett

Music arranged by:  Justin Adams

ABOUT MARYLYNN

MaryLynn was a founding member of the Grammy nominated vocal jazz group, Rare Silk.  Their very first album, “New Weave” flew to the top of the Billboard Jazz charts and received 2 Grammy nominations.  MaryLynn and the group toured the world singing in the US, Europe and Japan.  The group received acclaim working alongside artists such as Miles Davis, Branford Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter, Robben Ford, Dianne Reeves and opening acts for Spyro Gyra and BB King.  Their touring took them to some of the best venues in the country – The Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Blues Alley in DC, New York Jazz clubs, and the Boston Globe Jazz Festival.

Rare Silk toured with the venerable Benny Goodman for 10 months prior to their first recording and subsequent Grammy nominations.  “We went to the Grammys in 1984 – the year Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ was huge!!

‘Rare Silk’ still receives accolades to this day.  From fans on Amazon:

“The quality of the voice, the vocal and instrumental arrangements are glorious.  This is a classic pure and simple.  Right up there with the crystalline jazz interpretations and expressions of the great Bill Evans.”
