Why we like it: To call a musician a “poet” is not always a compliment. Poetry often dwells in the realm of pretension and pomp. Still, we expect our songwriters to be poets. But we also want them to speak to us with an ease that resonates as common, yet also with a clear profundity that says beautifully, perfectly what we wish we could.

Jeff Finlin does just that on The Tao of Motor Oil. His words may catch your heart off-guard, but know better: This songwriter is a poet in the guise of an everyman. His music may be the disguise: As on past efforts, Finlin travels the railways and highways of the American sound, drawing from country, blues, and rock ‘n’ roll – without following well-tread paths. His music is familiar but fresh and overflowing with soulful inspiration.

In the end, the poet prevails in the shadows. As the title signals, this is an album about movement: “Tao” loosely translates as “the way.” It seems Finlin sees the release from struggle as an open highway, a fascination he shares with one of his fans, Bruce SpringsteeSpringsteenn. But this is a freedom that no car, no highway will allow you to control, because that is not the way. “Take your hands off the wheel. Just let go,” Finlin sings.

None of this is heavy handed. Finlin’s characters are not always escaping unique, dramatic problems worthy of a feature film. There is nothing special about a broken heart, really. “You can sleep and I will drive / We’ll watch the skyline drift away / Thank God we made it out this time.”

What you will find on The Tao of Motor Oil is the complex beauty of lives we could encounter any day, filtered through the gaze of a day-to-day poet.

REKHA OHAL is a singer, songwriter and pianist who hails from Washington D.C. by way of India. She has hosted thriving and long-standing residencies at some of Denver’s premiere clubs including Elway’s, India’s Pearl, the Westin, the Burnsley, Dazzle, and more. She is a multi-season favorite at the City Park Jazz Concert series and recently performed at Red Rocks with …Backed by some of the most talented and prolific musicians in the west, including Dan Schwindt on guitar and Matt Houston on drums, Rekha’s music is mesmerizing and incandescent.

ELIZABETH ROSE is an electric mainstay in the Denver music and cultural arts scenes. She has fronted some of the city’s most accomplished bands, including Judge Roughneck, Sympathy F, and the Elizabeth Rose Trio. She is also an accomplished actress and has starred in a number of Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ productions, including “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” She is a brilliant and poignant writer who pulls no punches in her exploration of sensuality, love, and upheaval. She is supported by long-time bandmates Tony Morales on drums, and Kyle Jones on bass.

HEATHER LARRABEE is a writer and vocalist who hails from the Love Royale Collective. Her rhythmic music draws on heavy soul and jazz influences with strains of pop and indie-rock for cross-pollination. Heather’s smoky sound evokes full moon block parties on dark streets far away. She is joined by her co-conspirator Kyle Jones on bass, and brother Matt Larrabee on guitar. Tony Morales rounds out the troupe on drums.

Jonny Barber and the Rhythm Razors – Rockabilly Band

The Rockabilly band, Jonny Barber & The Rhythm Razors was formed in 2010 by ace performer, Jonny Barber (also known as The Velvet Elvis for his “young Elvis,” good looks!) on vocals and guitar, Symphony Tidwell on standup bass, and Randee McKnight on drums . The Rhythm Razors were mainly inspired by Bill Haley & the Comets as well as the sounds of Sun Records artists from the 1950s.

Taking liberally from the playbooks of Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, the band also cites neo-billy bands, The Stray Cats and Hillbilly Hellcats as influences. In Denver, the band met up with Willie Lewis, founder of the Rock-A-Billy Record Co. label. He offered to work with Jonny, and even invited him to play lead guitar on some of his own records. The first Jonny Barber & The Rhythm Razors record, released on a gold vinyl 45, was “Dial 000/Mama Said.” The songs, written by Jonny, combine the influences of the traditional rockabilly sound with lyrics that deal with contemporary themes.

You will dance in the aisles, experience a band rocking the joint ’til the roof shakes, and see first hand the sound that fueled the legends of early Rock ‘n’ Roll. With the inclusion of modern-day hits in the set-list, Jonny Barber & The Rhythm Razors beg the question, “What would Elvis be playing if he were alive today?”

Come back in November when the band returns from their European tour! Jonny and the Razors will be appearing at Lannie’s on Wednesday, November 17th.

Lannie loves Motown and LOVES her friend, Ron Ivory and his extreme talent, so it was a natural fit that she come up with the idea of starring Ron in a show about Detroit City.

Together with his three incredibly diverse and vocally talented singers, The Four Tones, Ron and his band will perform a high energy, nostalgic and heart-warming show about one of music’s greatest eras, Berry Gordy’s infamous MOTOWN. From Smokey Robinson to The Supremes to Michael Jackson, and all the legendary acts in between, this show will take you on a foot-stomping and heart tugging trip down memory lane.

Ron Ivory is recognized as an entertainment icon in Denver and the Rocky Mountain region. He is an extraordinarily soulful singer with a charismatic stage presence that few can match. He has a diverse musical background and years of experience singing R&B, Jazz, Rock n’ Roll, DooWop, Gospel and standards to form his amazingly well rounded musical and vocal repertoire.

As the band’s leader, Ron has arranged the tight vocal harmonies with the other three singers, and has choreographed the show-stopping steps in order to emulate the classic onstage performances of acts like The Temptations and Four Tops.
